Many cities are blessed with island destinations close by, but only Darwin has the Tiwi Islands. The islands are home to the Tiwi people, coastal island Aborigines with permanent smiles. A day tour will provide you with an insight into the Tiwi people’s culture and lifestyle. Bathurst Island will reveal scenes to you seldom viewed by outsiders and leave you with a lifetime memory and a longing to return.

Make your way to the General Aviation Terminal, Darwin Airport by 7.30 am (own expense). Depart at 8.00am for the 30 minute flight to Bathurst Island to join a guided journey through the modern day Aboriginal community of Nguiu. Visit the museum with its displays of traditional art and depictions of the Tiwi ‘Dreamtime’ stories and the Early Mission Precinct with its unique Tiwi style Catholic Church. Visit the Arts and Crafts Centres for the opportunity to purchase Tiwi arts and crafts at island prices. At morning tea spend time with our guides and Tiwi ladies enjoying billy tea and damper. Witness traditional totem dances and a smoking ceremony to bless the visitors and hear about the meanings behind them. Visit a Tiwi burial site and learn some of the complex rituals associated with the Pukamani Poles (burial poles). |

Leaving Darwin, we travel on the Arnhem Highway across the Adelaide River and Marrakai Plains. A wide selection of native wildlife has made this region their home. Stop at Nourlangie Rock, where your Guide will lead a walk to view ancient Aboriginal rock art. After lunch we join our local guide for a cruise on the famous Yellow Water Billabong. Search for saltwater crocodiles and the colourful range of bird life this region is renowned for. Visit the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre and view the informative displays depicting the traditions of the Aboriginal people in Kakadu, before returning to Darwin. An optional spectacular 50 minute scenic flight over Kakadu is available today. |

The fee is $25 per adult. You only have to pay this fee once when purchasing 2 or more Day Tours in this national park, as entry is valid for 3 consecutive days. It is an additional compulsory government charge at time of booking and is subject to change without notice. Children 15 years and under are not required to pay the entry fee. You must carry your ticket with you every time you enter the National Park or you will be required to purchase another ticket. |

Travel south through tropical country, passing former WWII airstrips. We make a short stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, a site dedicated to those killed in the air raids in Darwin in the 1940s. Continue to Edith Falls, where there is time for a refreshing swim in the waterhole beneath the falls (conditions permitting). Enjoy lunch and a 2 hour scenic cruise through Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park. Enjoy a brief tour of Katherine, the third largest town in the Territory and hub of the region’s cattle and farming industries. An evening stop is made at Adelaide River where you may purchase dinner (own expense). You may like to sample the famous ‘Barra and Chips’, before returning to Darwin. |

Visiting the main falls of Litchfield National Park, you have the opportunity for scenic and interpretive bush and monsoon vine forest walks. View Florence Falls from a high vantage point before making your way down the stairs to the plunge pool below. Visit Tolmer Falls for a magnificent view of the water cascading down to the deep waterhole below. We venture to Wangi Falls for another opportunity for a swim in the large crystal clear pool and an optional steady climb through the monsoon vine forest to the top of the falls. A great day also for taking many interesting photos, including the amazing stand of termite mounds. |
