Watching the "willy willies" blow by in Alice Springs isn't one of the greatest attractions for a city. So thankfully Alice Springs has a wide range of other activities for the whole family. With it based in the outback, it can give quite different tours and activities than the ones found in the city and have displays about the Australian flora and fauna you won’t find anywhere else.
Ochre Pits – Being only a short drive west of Alice Springs, the Ochre Pits had been used for generations by the local Aboriginal people as a mine for the colourful mineral ochre. Once here you will be able to explore at your own leisurely pace to explore and discover about the area. An information shelter at the site provides information about how, why and when the Ochre Pits were used. With this you can then sit down in the scenic surrounds and enjoy a barbecue lunch.
Alice Springs Reptile Centre – Alice Springs Reptile Centre offers the largest reptile display in the Northern Territory. Call into the Alice Springs Reptile Centre and be amazed by the extensive range of reptiles including the gigantic Perentie Goanna, Frill Neck Lizards and Thorny Devils. The Gemtree – With a short drive north-west of Alice Springs you will arrive at what the locals call "Gemtree". Here you can enjoy the popular nature trail, feed the fish in the billabong, or have a hit of golf on the bush golf course. Gemtree also allows you to have a go and try out fossicking for gems with tours to the nearby garnet and zircon fields. You might just find the next big one.
The Milky Way Cafe – Central Australia has world renowned clear blue skies. So the Milky Way Cafe provides guests with an enthralling experience called Spirit of the Night Sky. The presentation introduces the audience to the Southern Hemisphere night sky due to it being obscured by smoke and city lights from any of the big towns. Being an entertaining, informative, it brings practical and scientific knowledge together with indigenous and modern story telling.
