Arnhem Land is located in the center of Australia's northern coast and bordered by Kakadu National Park, the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Arnhem Land is well known for its wild coastlines, deserted islands, rivers teeming with fish, rainforest's, soaring escarpments and savanna woodland.
Its small population is mostly Aboriginal people - Yolgnu being the leading group - whose traditional culture remains largely intact. This is also where the didjeridu originated. Like a country within a country, access to Arnhem Land is restricted by decree of the traditional landowners. Only a select few tour operators have earned the trust of the traditional landowners and are able to bring outsiders in. It is highly advised to travel to Arnhem Land on a tour.
East Arnhem Land is one of the last wilderness areas on earth, yet all services can be found in the town of Nhulunbuy, located on the Gove Peninsula approximately 750 kms by road from Katherine.
The Gove Peninsula is scenic with long white sandy beaches, azure waters and green vegetation. This is where the Gulf of Carpentaria meets the Arafura Sea and the temperature ranges between 28C and 30C with plenty of cool breezes.
