Escape Sportfishing Lodge is located on Groote Eylandt and is operating with permission of the Anindilyakwa Land Council and local traditional land owners.

Breakfast and dinner will be held in the restaurant at Dugong Beach Resort. A well maintained 9 hole golf course is a short walk from the Lodge so why not enjoy a round of golf as part of your escape sportfishing holiday.

Accommodation Information:

The Lodge can cater for up to 24 guests in luxury. For larger corporate groups, Resort rooms can be utilised. The comfortable central lounge area is the perfect place to have a drink and share fishing stories whilst taking in magnificent views from the large deck across the Gulf of Carpentaria. Enjoy watching spectacular sunsets with a light refreshment after a memorable day of fishing.

Upmarket safari style tented cabins are twin or double share, fully air-conditioned with ensuites, mini-bar fridge, tea and coffee making facilities. Each cabin boasts its own private balcony with stunning water views extending across the beach to nearby Connexion Island and beyond.

Jig soft plastics for reef dwellers such as red emperor, mangrove jack, golden snapper, coral trout, or the mighty black jewfish. Don’t expect this session to be any easier – these reef dwellers can be hard to handle and put up a great fight as they stay deep and try to bust you off on the coral bommies.

For some more action have a go at popper fishing for giant trevally, mackerel, coral trout, queenfish and world record barracuda. Fish love the surface movement of poppers and will suddenly come from nowhere to strike at your lure creating an explosion in the water.

Fish creeks, rivers and estuaries where you can cast and troll lures around sand flats, rock bars and rocky outcrops for the magnificent icon sportfish, the barramundi. This fish puts up an unforgettable battle with its fast runs and high leaps as it tries to throw your lure. Barramundi is a must catch for all visitors to the Territory; it can grow to well over a metre in length and is found in the waters surrounding Groote Eylandt.

If this is not enough to whet your appetite, make the challenge even tougher and target all of the above species and more on fly tackle.

Boats
7 and 8m customised centre console, Haines Hunter Prowlers will be used providing maximum comfort for anglers. No time will be wasted getting you to the water each day with the boats moored right in front of the Lodge on our floating jetty.

Fishing Tackle
Quality Shimano fishing tackle will be provided for all guests on a replace if lost or damaged basis. Some fly tackle will be available, however anglers may prefer to bring their own favourite customised outfit.

The scenery on Groote is spectacular, with sandstone escarpments, pristine beaches and an abundance of wildlife, from small birds to the infamous crocodile. The waters are alive with turtles, manta rays, dolphins, dugong, and over 50 different fish species can be caught in this area. Fish Species
Over 50 different species can be caught in the pristine waters surrounding Groote Eylandt. They include over 5 species of trevally, including the monster GT; queenfish, blue and threadfin salmon, parrot fish, long-nosed emperor, cod, chinaman, saddle-tail and scarlet snapper, spangled emperor, tricky snapper and much more.

Light Tackle Game Fishing
To top it all off, Groote Eylandt has a great light tackle game fishery where anglers can target the majestic sailfish and black marlin on lures, bait and fly. The main billfish fishing grounds are located close to the island. While targeting sailfish and marlin you can expect plenty of other fishing action as you encounter mackerel, tuna, cobia and barracuda, which are prolific in the area, and keen to attack your lures.

Cultural Experience
are being developed with the Traditional Owners and will be available to guests visiting the Lodge to combine with their Sportfishing Package. The Cultural Centre at the Resort will display a range of the unique local art and craft and provide guests with the opportunity to learn more about the history of Groote Eylandt and the Anindilyakwa people.

Dugong Beach Resort
offers a relaxed tropical atmosphere with many styles of accommodation including Executive Beach Bungalows, Deluxe Beach Bungalows and Business Suites. Accommodation is located close to the beach, providing guests with breathtaking views. The Resort facilities will be available to all guests of the Sportfishing Lodge and include restaurant with licensed bar, swimming pool, business centre, conference room and cultural centre.

Package inclusions
Fully guided fishing tours with professional and experienced guides will be 3-7 days in duration. Your package includes; a return 1.5hr flight from Darwin, all meals, light refreshments, twin or double share accommodation and entry permit. All visitors to Groote Eylandt will require an entry permit approved by the Traditional Owners.
