Banubanu Adventure

Return

2 - 5 Day Packages on Bremer Island

Banubanu is a unique adventure in Arnhem Land that only few privileged adventurers will ever share. We deal in small groups allowing for a personalized service for 3 to 8 people.

We fly you out to our island retreat, where you can meet the local Aboriginal people, get amongst the world’s best fishing and generally relax and chill out at our camp setting in this pristine area of Bremer Island.

The retreat is located on the northern tip of Bremer Island approximately one kilometre from the Aboriginal homeland and its airstrip. The camp itself is in the middle of the narrow point of the island and has both the eastern and western coastlines within view and offers a grand outlook out over the neighbouring islands.

Packages include air charters, transfers, all fishing tackle, ice, bait, meals, permits, camping and sleeping gear.

We will organize your requirements for beer and wine on prepayment. Banu Banu is an alcohol free zone, however the Rirratjingu have agreed to allow consumption in moderation.

Bremer Island is approximately 8 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide with white sandy beaches and dunes covering most of the eastern side

These beaches result from the area being open to the Gulf of Carpentaria and the south east trade winds that blow during part of the dry season and make up part of a larger coastal area that is a major nesting site for the many sea turtles that inhabit these local waters.

When visiting the Wilderness Retreat there sometimes can be as many as five new turtle nests appearing every week on the small beach in front of our camp.

There are many smaller uninhabited islands that can be seen from Bremer and these islands are home for large populations of sea birds which feed off the bounty of these fish rich waters. The local population of approximately 25 Aboriginal people live at a Homeland Settlement 2 km south of the Wilderness Retreat.

The Camp

The camp is in keeping with a wilderness adventure. The facilities are simple but cater for the needs of those unaccustomed to camping rough and those who are accustomed to it but prefer not to. We provide comforts such as flush toilet, bush shower, large insect proof domes, camp beds and mattresses, bush catering and refrigeration.

Local Population

The population fluctuates with seasons, ceremonies and funerals. These people hunt, fish and gather the local products of the island to add to their diet and as raw material to make artifacts such as baskets, weavings, yidaki’s (didgeridoo’s) and fish spears.

It is not unusual for the local people to visit as they pass the camp when out hunting and collecting turtle eggs, oysters and fish. The local Aboriginal people are welcoming to our guests and if requested a guided tour of hunting and gathering and country can be organized.
