The majority of travel to Kakadu National Park is via the Arnhem Highway from Darwin using either self-drive vehicles or through organised coach tours. There are sealed roads from Darwin to the Park via the Arnhem Highway and from Katherine to the Park via the Kakadu Highway. The Bowali Visitor Centre near Jabiru is located 253 km from Darwin via the Arnhem Highway entrance. By road, you will need to allow around 3 hours travelling time from Darwin.
Darwin is approximately 4050km from Sydney, 3500km from Brisbane, 3200km from Adelaide, 4500km from Perth and 1482km from Alice Springs. Due to such large distances, it is usually not practical for international visitors to drive to Darwin from other state capital cities. The drive between Darwin and Alice Springs does however contain a number of interesting and unique sights for visitors to enjoy. As a result, many international visitors hire campervans (Motor Homes/Recreational Vehicles) to explore the Northern Territory.
