Many first time visitors to Alice Springs believe that Ayers Rock is visible from the town. In outback terms, it is only a stones throw from Alice Springs, but in real terms, Ayers Rock is located some 461 km southwest of Alice Springs. This single rock, is the world's largest, it is 3.6 km long and 348 metres high, and is one of Australia's biggest drawcard for tourists from around the world. Two thirds of the rock is actually buried underground and the whole region has deep cultural significance to the local Aboriginal people. Thousands of people visit the Rock each year to view the spectacular colours of sunrise and sunset. Climbing the Rock is still allowed, although has been severely restricted. Walking around the base of the Rock can take up to five hours, but allows you to see caves filled with Aboriginal artwork. Certain areas are restricted as Sacred Aboriginal sites and may not be visited. Approximately 30km to the west of Ayers Rock are The Olgas, 36 undulating domes scattered over an area larger than Ayers Rock. The Aboriginal term Kata Tjuta means many heads, and the Olgas are as impressive as Ayers Rock for their sheer size, formation and beauty.
